Conception Dream, “Tae-Mong” -Hong, Hyun Jae (Jessica)

The Interpretation of Dreams stands as a unique and classic work of Sigmund Freud in the history of psychology.Image Freud wrote more than 320 different books, articles, and essays. Out of these impressive works, he described The Interpretation of Dreams as his personal favorite as well as his most significant contribution to the understanding of human thought. The book outlines Freud’s belief that dreams are highly symbolic, containing both overt meanings (manifest content) as well as underlying, unconscious thoughts (latent content). According to him, dreams are our unconscious wishes in disguise.

There are some people who are against with Freud’s belief. The activation-synthesis model of dreaming, proposed by J. Allan Hobson and Robert McClarley in 1977, suggests that the physiological processes of the brain cause dreams. While this theory suggests that dreams are the result of internally generated signals, Hobson does not believe that dreams are meaningless. Instead, he suggests that dreaming is our most creative conscious state, one in which the chaotic, spontaneous recombination of cognitive elements produces novel configurations of information: new ideas. While many or even most of these ideas may be nonsensical, if even a few of its fanciful products are truly useful, our dream time will not have been wasted.”

I was curious whether Conception Dream is should be considered as conscious or unconscious state.

Conception Dreams are dreams that are said to foretell the conception or birth of a child, dreamed by the future mother or people close to her. This originated from China and has been spread out to some East Asian countries.

In Korean, conception dream is known as “Tae Mong”. It is a Korean word that means a dream of forthcoming Imageconception. “Tae” means becoming pregnant and “Mong” means a dream. Most of Koreans believe this. It is dreamed by a pregnant woman, or sometimes, by husbands and close relatives. So, they predict their babies by this dream. “Tae Mong” is different from a common dream. It is very hard to forget and it is too clear to escape your memory. Besides we can guess a baby’s sex by distinguishing what does appear in a dream. For example, if the baby is a boy, you will dream tigers, pigs, dragons, bears, bulls, horses, cranes, clams, comb which is made from gold, and so on. On the other hand, if the baby is a girl, you will dream about fish, peaches, deer, lotus flowers, jewelry, carps, turtle, small colorful snakes, moon, and some fruits and so on.

I wondered what my mom’s Tae Mong is. I asked to my mom. According to my mom, she was at the huge hotel lobby. There was a lake in the center. And the wide hotel was filled with full of bread. She was very excited and ate them while walking around the hotel. It is rare that bread appeared as Tae Mong. So, I looked for the meaning of eating bread. It means making fortune. Whether it is true or not, I am happy to know that I was born with a purpose. I felt that I am not useless, instead, I am valuable. It is interesting that all pregnant moms dream Tae Mong, isn’t it? Maybe it is related to one’s destiny.

It depends on us whether believe it or not.
